A Dog Who Loves Cello - Short Story
The subterranean basement of the Grand Symphony Hall was never truly quiet. Beneath the stage, through thick concrete and exposed pipes, filtered a perpetual, low hum. To the litter of puppies born behind a stack of unused stage risers, this was not noise; it was the world. Among them was an unusually large, thick-pawed puppy who spent his first weeks pressed against the concrete floor, feeling the rich, vibrating resonance of the lower strings above—the deep, amber purr of the cellos. To him, that low frequency was the rhythm of safety, a steady heartbeat far larger than his mother's.
When the building guards eventually discovered the nest, they acted out of safety concern, reporting the animals to animal welfare services. Officers gently gathered the mother and her pups into metal crates and transported them to the central shelter.
At the shelter, the world changed overnight. The warm, low rumble was replaced by a harsh, sterile silence punctuated only by the sharp clatter of food bowls and the echo of distressed barking. One by one, the puppies were adopted. The giant, broad-chested puppy was the last to remain.
The staff found him puzzling. He was not aggressive, but he was perpetually restless. He paced his kennel, vocalizing in low, anxious whines and rarely sleeping for more than a few minutes at a time. The shelter workers assumed he was hyperactive, but in truth, he was simply waiting for the frequency that made his world feel right.
Eventually, a young boy came to the shelter with his family. The boy was quiet, seeking a companion to keep him company during long, solitary afternoons after school. While other dogs jumped at the wire fence, the large puppy sat back, tired and heavy-eyed, looking at the boy with quiet intensity.
"I’ll name him Biggie!" the boy declared, stroking the puppy’s broad head.
On his first day in his new home, Biggie remained anxious. He trotted nervously from room to room, unable to settle down. But in the late afternoon, the boy sat down in the corner of his bedroom, adjusted his wooden chair, and took out an instrument. He rested the wooden body between his knees and drew a horsehair bow across the thickest string.
A low, resonant C-note echoed through the room.
Biggie froze. His ears perked up, and his chest expanded with a deep breath. As the boy began practicing his daily scales, the deep vibrations filled the air. Biggie walked slowly toward the boy, lowered his heavy body onto the rug beside the instrument's endpin, resting his chin directly on his front paws. Within two minutes, his breathing slowed into a deep, peaceful sleep.
It did not take long for the family to realize the pattern: Biggie only slept when the cello was playing. The moment the bow lifted and the sound faded, his eyelids would flutter open, and his restlessness would return. The poor pup was exhausted, having accumulated weeks of sleep deprivation since leaving his birthplace.
Determined to help his new friend rest, the boy began bringing Biggie along to his music academy lessons. The music school was a wonderland for Biggie. Walking down the hallways, he ignored the sharp trills of the flutes and the piercing notes of the violins. But when they reached the lower basement level—the cello and double bass studios—Biggie settled in immediately.
He became the beloved mascot of the cello department. While students practiced their sonatas and concertos, Biggie lay snoring softly underneath the music stands, his ribs gently rising and falling in time with the music.
Because Biggie slept so soundly during afternoon rehearsals, he was full of vitality at night. He transformed into the ultimate guardian for the home, keeping watch at the doors, alert and healthy, protecting the family that had given him a home.
Years passed, measured in music books and changing bow sizes. The boy grew taller, his tone richer and more expressive. Biggie grew into a magnificent, large dog with a glossy coat and a gentle demeanor.
Eventually, after years of rigorous study, the boy—now a young man—won an audition to join the city’s premier orchestra as a professional cellist. His debut performance was scheduled at the very place his career had begun to take shape: the Grand Symphony Hall.
On the evening of the concert, the young cellist received special permission to bring Biggie backstage. As they walked through the stage doors and descended the concrete ramp toward the warm-up rooms below, Biggie stopped. He lifted his nose, sniffing the familiar air, feeling the familiar hum of sound vibrating through the floorboards under his paws.
He didn't whine or pace. He walked into the dressing room, sat beside his owner’s cello case, and gave a low, content woof.
That night, as the young man walked out onto the grand stage under the bright lights, he looked toward the wings. Biggie was lying comfortably by the stage manager's desk, eyes half-closed, perfectly relaxed in the warmth of the hall where his life had begun, listening to the cello play.
5 bulan -
Aneh sekali rasanya, Ayah
Orang-orang menyebutmu,"Sewaktu almarhum..."
Orang-orang membantu sebab,"Almarhum dulu..."
Orang-orang menghampiri karena,"Waktu almarhum…"
Semua orang kini menyebutmu 'yang dikasihi Allah'
Baru 5 bulan, Ayah
Begitukah Ayah? Di sanakah juga ragaku ini nanti, Ayah?
Hari-hariku penuh, rindu Ayah
Jangan lupa al-fatihah
Begitu semua mengingatkan
Maaf Ayah, kadang hanya menangis saja dan luput membacakan
Baru 5 bulan, Ayah
berharap Ayah kembali, haha!
Ayah, semua bersaksi tentang persiapanmu ke perjalanan selanjutnya
Begitu pula aku mengamininya
Ayah, 5 bulan, maaf, masih menangis, semoga tak memberatkan.
Melihat saudara sebangsa
Merenggang nyawa akibat keangkuhan kepala negara
Ketika makhluk-Mu turut binasa
Dilalap api yang bukan lagi peribahasa
Ya Allah, Yang Maha Besar
Jutaan pohon itu habis terbakar
Yang bertasbih dari ujung daun sampai akar
Rumah aneka makhluk hilang hingga dasar
Ampuni jikalau hamba salah tatkala mendoakan
Ampuni jikalau hamba marah dan memohon keburukan
Setiap kali mengetahui langkah tak elok dari pemangku kebijakan
Ya Allah, Yang Maha Mengetahui
Berikan kami ketenangan hati
Dalam bagian skenario-Mu di Bumi
Dan kuat secara raga menghadapi semua ini
Amin.
Rindu saja.
Kini, ia hanya bisa kulihat dari foto
Sembari membayangkan suaranya
Apa yang bisa menyembuhkan duka ini
Orang-orang bilang, Doa.
Insya Allah.
Hi, Dad
Hey Daddy, I hope you're well
In the silence where angels dwell
I still hear your gentle voice
In every prayer, in every choice
There are more nights I break apart
Missing you with all my heart
But I trust Allah’s greater plan
And pray to be strong again
Sometimes I wish I had more time
To hold your hand and say goodbye
I thought there would be tomorrow
To laugh, to cry, and say “I’m sorry”
I thought there would be tomorrow
To joke, to play, and tell our stories
Now you're waiting in the barzakh
Beyond this world so far away
I hope Allah will reunite us
In Jannah one sweet day
I remember the days we shared
Every moment when you cared
Your advice still guides my way
Even though you cannot stay
If tears could build a road to you
I’d walk through every storm I knew
Until the sky turns bright above
And brings me back to your warm love
So I’ll keep praying every night
May your grave be filled with light
And when my time on earth is through
I pray that I’ll return to you
I thought there would be tomorrow
Another chance to make things right
I thought there would be tomorrow
Another day, another night
Now you're waiting in the barzakh
Where peaceful souls will someday rest
I hope Allah will reunite us
In Jannah, forever blessed
Hey Daddy, I miss you
Every single day
But InshaAllah we will meet again
And never fade away
Relawan...
Wahai hati yang rupawan
untukmu, para relawan
kan kudoakan diberi kekuatan
ragamu slalu disehatkan
Wahai jiwa-jiwa pilihan Tuhan
teguhlah dijalan kemanusiaan
Sakit sama melihat ketidakadilan
Perih sama melihat kedzaliman
Hati yang murni, memilah batil dan kebajikan
Hati yang teguh, menerjang dalam perjuangan
Wahai hati yang rupawan
untukmu para relawan....
